CHOCOLATE WORKSHOP IN YOUR SCHOOL

Congratulations to our mini Chocolatiers!

With us, the children discovered the incredible journey of chocolate, from the small cocoa bean to the delicious bar, and made their own gourmet creation (perhaps they gobbled it up too!).

Here are the answers to the mini-quiz, explanations and some bonuses to go further ;)

What We Learned Together

During the workshop, we explored where cocoa pods and beans come from, how fermentation and drying work, and the main steps at the Avanaa workshop: roasting, cracking & winnowing, grinding, conching, tempering, and molding.
And most importantly, each child created and decorated their very own chocolate lollipop — guaranteed pride!

ANSWERS TO THE QUIZ

1. What color is a cocoa pod?

Answer: c) All the colors of the rainbow.
Why? Depending on the variety and ripeness, a pod can be green, yellow, orange, red, or purple—and it can change color as it ripens.

2. Approximately how many beans does it take to make a bar of chocolate?

Answer: b) 50.
Why? It depends on the size of the beans and the size of the bar, but we generally consider around fifty beans for a standard bar.

3. Where does the word “chocolate” come from?

Answer: a) From the Aztec word xocolātl.
Why? The term comes from Nahuatl , the language of the Aztecs, and referred to a bitter and spicy cocoa drink.

BONUS :) Where do cocoa pods grow?

a) Underground
b) On a tree
c) On a bush

Answer: b) On a tree
Cocoa pods grow directly on the trunk and large branches of a tree called a cacao tree. They contain cocoa beans, the basis of chocolate.

BONUS ;) What's inside a cocoa pod?

a) Liquid chocolate
b) Beans surrounded by white pulp
c) Biscuits

Answer:
b) Beans surrounded by white pulp 🤍
This pulp is sweet and fruity—you can even eat it straight from the jar. The beans, however, will need to be fermented, dried, and then processed to become chocolate.
